Case Study: Multiplayer Online Game Engine

www.digitaldeadwood.com © 2004 TDG Communications. I programmed a multiplayer online roleplaying game chatroom that runs in any new browser, on any kind of computer, without requiring special installers or plugins. I created a PHP-based user database and chat server, and a Javascript game engine, complete with multi-layered animations, alpha transparency sprites (for particles, shadows and light glows), 3d depth-sorting and isometric occlusion, pathfinding AI, collision detection and sound effects. I also programmed mini-games like Blackjack, a slot machine, a shootout arcade game and an RPG quest. You can play for FREE - try it!
The game engine tracked user locations, chatting, movement, inventory, experience and appearance. Several talented artists and writers helped me bring to life a Wild West town filled with cowboys and gamblers. 3d models were rendered in isometric perspective to create hundreds of small images that are downloaded on demand from the web server to build player's avatars. Players can choose their occupation, clothing, skin, hairstyle and hat options to customize their online appearance, and they can chat with each other while adventuring around in a 50+ level universe, complete with saloons, casinos, cemeteries and hotels. Players can also interact with NPC's like Wild Bill, Calamity Jane, Potato Creek Johnny and others. NPC's can give quests to the users to find long lost items, and users can earn money and legend points by gambling and adventuring. This was a wonderfully complex, challenging and highly rewarding project and the results speak for themselves.
